A urine test gives your veterinarian valuable information about your cat's health. In many typical cat diseases, certain values in the urine are changed. In the case of many illnesses, such as kidney failure and diabetes, regular urine tests are also necessary for monitoring purposes. But why should you collect a urine sample at home? In any case, we can assure you: your vet is not doing this to annoy you. Although he can also collect urine from your cat in the practice, collecting urine at home has many advantages. In most cases, to take a urine sample in practice, the veterinarian will use a needle to pierce the bladder through the abdominal wall and suck out some of the urine. While this isn't nearly as dramatic as it sounds, there's no doubt that collecting the urine sample at home means less stress for cats. And sometimes urine collected in a stress-free environment is simply better suited for testing. For example, the sugar level (glucose) in the urine of most cats increases in response to the stress of the veterinary practice. However, an increased sugar level in the urine can, for example, simulate diabetes where there is none. On the other hand, there are of course also situations in which urine collected at home is only suitable to a limited extent or not at all - for example, if the urine sample has to be taken sterile for a bacteriological examination. Before filling the litter box with the special litter, completely remove the regular litter and clean the litter box thoroughly. There should be no urine or feces left behind. As soon as it is dry again, you can pour in the special litter. If you have multiple litter boxes, it may be necessary to block the others. A toilet with special litter is usually less attractive to cats than one with normal litter. Keep an eye on the litter box.
