Whilst most Amazons kept as pets are bred in captivity, all 'Amazon' parrots come originally from Central or South America. They are well-known as pet birds and many of them will imitate human speech, though not with the clarity of voice heard in grey parrots. Loud, extrovert birds. This book explores the range of species of Amazon parrots, concentrating on those types often seen as pet or companion birds. Details of all aspects of the care of companion Amazons is covered, including housing in cages and aviaries, recommended diets, basic training including the teaching of flight requests, how to overcome any behavioural problems, and aspects of health and first aid. There is also a section on how to recover a lost Amazon, in case you lose your bird. While most Amazons share many similar characteristics as companion birds, there are important differences between some species and the details of these are included as well. Amazon parrots are not usually quiet or shy birds. Once they are used to their home, most reveal their extrovert nature. They can be very loud and demanding birds to keep well. With proper care, particularly appropriate training and by teaching your bird to accept some simple requests, you should have a parrot who is a joy to be with. But Amazon parrots are not 'quiet' in any sense of the word. They are full of character, and playful even boisterous birds whose proper care requires the bird's keeper to have a sound knowledge of their bird's true needs. See more
